After-School Programs
Programs 2009-2010
In 2008, MESPA launched Muraco After School Programs (MASP), starting with Super Sports, an after school sports program taught by third grade teacher, Leah Ferullo. Super Sports was a huge success, and this year MESPA has expanded MASP to include several other after school options. The programs typically run for eight weeks, with the exception of the Learn to Type course, which runs for 4 weeks. The programs are all held at Muraco Elementary School either before school or directly after school. Registration information for all programs is sent out via Constant Contact and includes dates of sessions, fees and grade eligibility. The purpose of MASP is to provide Muraco students with an opportunity to participate in creative extra-curricular activities in a convenient, safe and familiar location. All profits from MASP fund MESPA enrichment programs and activities. This year's programs include:
Games and More
Games and More centers around educational, grade appropriate games and provides an opportunity for small groups of students to participate in board games such as Chess, Checkers, Sorry, Battleship. Kindergarten teacher Christina Ulacco oversees the students in her classroom directly after school until 4:00 p.m. Enrollment is 20 attendees per class and is open to all students in Grades 1 - 4.
Kidstock
Kidstock Co-sponsored by MESPA, this Kidstock Creative Theater Education Center program offers children a chance to explore their creativity, challenge their imagination and learn valuable life skills through onstage play in positive self expression, creative problem solving, emotional awareness & physical communication. Kidstock's instructors are "actors-educators" trained in providing a non-competitive and supportive team environment that supports both new performers as well as developing young actors. The class is held directly after school until 3:30 p.m. Enrollment is 20 attendees per class and is open to all students in Grades K-1.
Learn to Type
In the Learn to Type program, acquiring correct keyboarding technique is the basic objective. This includes proper body, hand and finger positions; key stroking techniques; spacing and shifting techniques; and immediate return at the end of the lines. The class is taught by our technology teacher, Joanne Najarian. Four-week sessions run periodically during the year, usually before school from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. Enrollment is 20 attendees per class and is open to students in Grades 4 & 5, with priority to students in Grade 5.
Reader's Theater Program
The Reader's Theater class, taught by WPS Library Media Specialist, Juliana Jarvis, explores all sorts of literature from fractured fairy tales to monologues about every day kids going through the ups and downs of growing. Children learn to use the voice as an instrument acting out plays and monologues. Students improve reading skills, public speaking and fluency, while experiencing characters and scripts first hand. Enrollment in Reader's Theater is 12 students and is open to Grades 3, 4 and 5. The program meets in the library directly after school until 3:45 p.m.
Super Sports
Super Sports is taught by Third Grade teacher, Leah Ferullo, with the assistance of Patrick Gryp. The program allows small groups of students to participate in sports at Muraco directly after school until 4:00 p.m. Students are grouped by age -- Grades 1-2 and Grades 3-5 -- and each group meets once a week. Enrollment in Super Sports is 20 students in the Grades 1-2 group and 25 students in the Grades 3-5 group.
